It was the first in a series of trainings that Barefoot Workshops will hold in South Africa and other countries, to model the idea that video can be used as a practical aid to policymakers, to evaluate and discern best practices among the multitude of program initiatives funded by U.S. dollars. Local partners included, Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation, NOAH (Nurturing Orphans of AIDS for Humanity), Monwabisi, Helping Hands, Africa Jam and YouthAIDS. Members of PEPFAR, USAID's Global Health office, U.S. State Department, the Corporate Council on Africa and Computer Frontiers- which collectively control more than 300 million dollars in annual aid to combat HIV/AIDS globally- deemed the event a success and retreated to internal talks about how video can be used to meet global health challenges, particularly HIV/AIDS, which has claimed the lives of nearly 25 million people, and infected 40 million others worldwide. 11.18.06Barefoot's 4 week NGO workshop in Cape Town gears up to beginStudents from South Africa, USA and France arrive in Cape Town, South Africa to begin Barefoot's 4 week NGO workshop. 11.05.06Barefoot partners with White House Digital Freedom InitiativeThe Presidential Digital Freedom Initiative (DFI), a U.S. public/private, world-wide cooperative effort coordinated by the U.S. Department of State, is proud to partner with Barefoot Workshops on its upcoming workshop in South Africa. The key to this effort is a four-week workshop being organized by Barefoot Workshops in Cape Town, South Africa, from November 19 to December 16, 2006. The NGOs will learn the skills needed to make informative and empowering videos and then return to their communities with the knowledge and technology needed to share their message with their local and national communities. The Digital Freedom Initiative engages federal agencies, the private sector, non-profit organizations and universities working together to build technical capacity, empower people, and spur economic growth through increased use of information and communications technologies. This workshop will support the DFIÂs existing efforts to expand connectivity and share U.S. experience with developing nations.
