From November 9th- December 17th, 2007, Barefoot Workshops, with support from the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI), trained twenty-six participants from fourteen civil society organizations (CSOs) in Kuwait and Jordan, to create twenty, locally-produced service announcements (PSAs).

Participants, mainly women and youth, learned how to write, shoot, produce, and edit, thirty-second noncommercial videos, to raise awareness about issues of public concern.

The PSAs addressed such topics as: youth employment, domestic abuse, free speech, human rights, women's right to vote, and ICT education for youth.

Participating organizations in Jordan included: ZENID, Queen Zein Al Sharaf Institute for Development, King Abduallah II Fund for Development, World Links Arab Region (WLAR), The Jordan Center for Strategic Studies, Al Urdun Al Jadid Research Center – The Jordan Forum for Economic Development, Family Guidance and Awareness Center (FGAC), and Land and Human to Advocate Progress (LHAP).

The aim of the workshops was to foster greater civic participation, activism, and debate in the region of the Middle East by teaching civil society organizations how to create messages that improve their societies from within.

Content is being distributed in 2008, through regional television networks, movie theatres, DVD stores, Internet and mobile platforms, as well as through social networking tools, such as Facebook and YouTube, to reach international audiences.

PSAs are available in English and Arabic to broadcasters and organizations who wish to distribute them “rights-free.” Please contact: info@barefootworkshops.com for more information.
