Description

This PSA depicts a domestic worker – or maid – who is ironing a shirt in a shadowy room. She is startled by the voices of a child, mother, and others in the household, demanding services: “Bring water!” “Finish the ironing!” “Where is my bag?” Confused and overwhelmed she sinks to the floor covering her ears with her hands. A fact appears on the screen – “In Kuwait, 72% of domestic laborers work seven days a week without breaks. Be merciful.” The logo and web site for the Social Work Society appears.

Ms. Abrar Al Masoud and her brother, Mr. Mazyoud Al Masoud, wish to increase awareness amongst the general public about conditions that domestic workers, largely Indian and other minorities face, in Kuwaiti households. Most Kuwaiti families of any standing employ such workers, but give little thought to their long, unbroken schedules. There are presently no enforced standards, legal or otherwise, to protect the basic rights of these domestic laborers.
